The Knight - Homage to Martini, oil on board 34 x 64cm
In this new body of work, Marina Finlay takes inspiration from artists such as Cranach, Martini and Brueghel. In Finlay’s painted world, we step into an almost psychedelic dreamland, where backgrounds are electrified which richly coloured patterns and each figure radiates with an iridescent glow. Finlay’s paintings are presented as kinds of tableaux, elaborately patterned dioramas with costumed figures on a stage-like surround. The theatricality of these paintings is perhaps a nod to Finlay’s former life as an actor.
